There is a large market for raw milk as well as pasturised milk. Raw milk appeals to organic eaters and persons who are lactose intolerant. Studies show that goat milk is more easily digested than cow's milk and it is more easily absorbed into the digestive system.

To what extent can goat farming contribute to diversifying the economy of Trinidad and Tobago?
I think to a great extent if employed holistically. In Trinidad goats are raised mainly for meat, there should be more emphasis on the value added products.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Gail. However, some people are more health conscious today and are drinking a lot of goat milk. In Massy Supermarkets, for example, there are powdered goat milk (imported) as well as local pasteurized goat milk. Once people are drinking goat milk then they will ultimately eat goat cheese.
DeleteResearch shows that goat cheese is made in Orange Hill, Tobago so there is a market for the value added products.
DeleteFirstly, people must have a genuine love for goat farming, a sincere deep rooted passion for the animals and then select good breeds to increase their milk production or meat production accordingly. Additionally, with increasing concerns about developing healthy lifestyles I can see goat farming being fundamental to diversifying the economy. However, there must be government intervention in various areas to assist farmers in improving their herd through importation of quality rams and does but there must also be continuous monitoring and evaluation
